Oh my goodness, it was so pretty! Well, until the weight of the ice started making the tree limbs break and fall all over the place. They were hitting the house all night! 😯

Oh yes, Russia absolutely does winter. No one’s denying that. But Chicago’s specialty is weaponized cold. January 1985: Chicago hit −27°F (−33°C), colder than Moscow at the same time. Not a village in Siberia, but the capital. Million+ city to million+ city. Add −60°F (−51°C) wind chills, lake-effect snow blowing sideways, and a city built on a grid that funnels wind like a wind tunnel.

The northern Great Plains, Montana and North Dakota, is our Siberia, but brutal cold snaps in the windy city are often dubbed ‘Chiberia’ (Chicago + Siberia) by local meteorologists and media, a nickname that caught on during the 2014 polar vortex. Media outlets have also given infamous storms memorable monikers like ‘Snowmageddon’ (2011 Groundhog Day Blizzard) to convey just how extreme the city’s winter can get.

And just this year, November–December 2025 delivered a harsh reminder: early-season snowfall already surpassed 17 inches (43 cm), including a single-day November record of 8.4 inches (21 cm), while temperatures plunged into rare single digits (−12°C) with brutal wind chills. Chicago weather never fails to surprise.

I don't mind the cold weather. Like Carly, I'd rather have some snow than the endless rain we get in England all year round. Down in the South of England we don't get much snow, which I think is unfortunate.

The thing I don't like is the short days. Less than 8 hours of daylight in the middle of winter.

Yeah I was thinking much the same - we don’t get the extreme cold very often, but my goodness, the humidity!

It's a deal! Ain't gotta shovel rain of scrape it off the windscreen! ☔

It wasn't such a big thing when I was younger, but I'm not up to the task of clearing it anymore. I'll be glad when the wife retires so we can just hibernate in winter! 🐻

You should move to the Chicago Metropolitan Area. We have it all, genuine blizzards with zero visibility, extreme cold that will freeze your nuts off, torrential rains that laugh at umbrellas and raincoats, the sport of challenging flooded viaducts with your car, winds that occasionally remove roofs for sport, and that’s not even counting the tornadoes. We get lightning storms that fry golfers mid-swing, waves on Lake Michigan that casually relocate boats onto highways, and a lake that eats fishermen for breakfast, lunch, and dinner when it’s in the mood. It’s basically a full-contact weather amusement park, enjoyed by nearly 9 million hardy souls who wouldn’t dream of living anywhere else, mostly because everywhere else seems boring.

Reminds me of Swansea! 😂😂😂

I would come to Chicago, Hanna, regardless of the weather conditions, just so that I could be with you. When the weather is bad, we can cuddle up together in front of a roaring fire.

Yes its pretty windy or mild or wet normally on Christmas Day in Sussex, back in the early 2000s, we had snow and everything ground to a halt, no buses or trains. I walked into work at around midnight through the snow to get to my nightshift, took me around an hour and a half.

I got a thankyou from my Manager and a box of chocolates for making the effort, as some of the nightshift lived closer than i did, but never bothered showing up.

I had to walk down a steep icy hill, lucky i had my steel toecap boots on, they also had good grip😊

That'd be nice if I could still drink. Alcohol and my BP meds don't play nice together. Cold's not really the issue. Damn snow and ice combo might as well be concrete! Doc says not to lift over 20kg coz of my heart bugaboos and this stuff is so heavy and dense, even the snow blower bogs down!

Do you know, wife girl went to work today? I tell you that girl is crazy. She got a ride with a coworker though. He's got a big truck. I could walk under it without bumping my head! 🛻

I have a dead right arm from chopping and scraping ice off the driveway the past few days. The good news is we got the first 20 feet sort of clear. Only 180 feet to go! I figure we should be done by mid April. 🤣

Oh, there's more snow in the forecast for this Saturday. Hopefully that's what it will be, snow and not straight ice! 🧊

Must admit I gave into the cold weather yesterday and I had a glass of whiskey with somebody I was visiting. I decided it was probably best not to check my BP afterwards! 🤣. It doesn’t interfere with my meds but it does spike my BP.
