House Move

Afternoon everyone,

I’m looking for some advice surrounding a potential house move, I’m aiming to get my current house ready and on the market in around 6 months time.

As most of you know, I have 4 dolls, 3 are Zelex SLE’s so I do my utmost to make sure they’re protected. In my current house I have built in wardrobes which they all store in perfectly along with their clothes and lingerie. I’ve also fitted an electric winch which allows me to lift them into the loft and store them inside their boxes if any family are visiting, I’ll probably do this when the house is on the market too as it’ll avoid any potential for them being seen when I have viewings (I asked to see inside the wardrobe when I viewed the house so, as assume others will too).

My biggest problem is the move itself, I’ll be using professional removals for the grunt work, the idea of 4 dolls being loaded into a removal van where they could be damaged or, opened. Delivery & removal people aren’t daft and I’m guessing they’ll know what’s inside the boxes. Now I could use pallet wrap around the boxes to seal them closed which would remove the opening risk but, I’m still not 100% sure about this idea.

My only other option would be a short term rental on a storage unit, near to the location of my new house and store all my dolly items in one location, then move them into my new house myself.

Just wondering if anyone else has got around house moving and, what they did to hide their ladies and how you moved them from one location to the other.

I’ve been thinking something similar because a house-move might well be on the cards for me in the not too distant future.
I’m sure the removals guys have probably seen all sorts of things in their time, so they can probably guess what’s in the boxes. But how far are you moving? Is it all going to be done in one day? In which case are you present in your current house while they are packing? And then travelling to your new property at the same time as them so that you are present for the unpacking? So they are unlikely to open the boxes then. They are probably unlikely to open the boxes anyway as they will be too busy to be nosey. And also it would ruin their reputation if the public discovered they were opening up privately sealed boxes. So I think they would be very unlikely to open them up.

I’ve also thought that if I move, I will very probably get my dolls dressed, and drive them to my new location in my own car as passengers, beforehand - perhaps at night so that nobody sees me putting the dolls in the car or taking them out afterwards at my new location. I’d probably have to make a couple of trips to do that.

Just a couple of suggestions anyway, I’ve not actually had the experience yet.

Don’t worry about the weight the removal guys - not white van cowboys ☹️ , have piano bogies to move the heavy stuff. As Jed says about their reputation, also they won’t get a tip 😁

I’ll do the same as I did last time, I only moved 4 years ago and I opted to pack myself but have removals collect boxes from each room and deposit each box into the rooms in the new house. I prefer not letting them back anyway as it means I bin things that I no longer need, it was a very effective declutter.

I’ll be using the same removals company too, it cost me £2100 for everything over 3 floors but, they assembled my bed, plumbed in the washer and moved every box into the designated rooms. When I unpacked, I found that not a single thing had been damaged or broken so was very happy with the service.

I think I’m just going to do pallet wrap around the boxes and say it’s new furniture if they ask. The maximum box will be 40kg so it’s not like it’s stupidly heavy.

Agreed, I’ll use pallet wrap around the boxes too which will add security and stop any snooping. £200 per month on a small storage unit is just money I could do without spending.

Just a thought, but how about just boxing your ladies up and getting a courier to pick them up and deliver them to your new home?

Obviously I don't know what the cost would be or could you not hire a van and pop them, boxed up in the back and take them yourself, that is if you drive🤔

I would just rent a van and move them myself.

Well at least then you would have complete control over what happens to them. I'm actually classed as a travel model funnily enough, but it means removing all my stuffing for trips, Bobby would probably fill me up with all his dirty boxer shorts🤣🤣🤣

When you’re selling and buying on the same day, it’s not really an option. Removals generally arrive at 5-6am so getting a van would be quite a task. Also; a self store unit for a month is around the £200 which is roughly the cost of just a weekends van hire.

There’s a boat load going on, once your old house is empty you need to do the final sweep through with the vac, mop and take pictures all whilst waiting for a solicitor to call to confirm you now own the new house and, you must be ready to immediately vacate the old house because it’s no longer yours (also needs to be in a suitable condition).

Then it’s throw everything in the car and get to the new house, preferably before the removal men arrive with your possessions so you can direct them into each room.

If you’re lucky, you have time for an evening meal but, forget breakfast and lunch… and this is using a company. The people who sold my current house used a “mate” with a van; it took them 3 hours longer than it should to vacate simply because they’d penny pinched. If I wanted to, I could’ve gone mad but it wouldn’t have achieved anything.

I wouldn’t trust them with a courier, they’d leave me completely for at least 24 hours. I think pallet wrap around the boxes and letting the removals company deal with them is safest. I’ll probably back the heads separately too :)

When the wife and I got this place, we moved everything ourselves. Boxed up the smaller stuff and friends helped us move the bigger things. Dolls though, along with the cat just road with us in the car to our new house.

Still remember our new neighbor's faces when I brought Suzy in. I threw a bin liner over her head to carry her in. Wasn't trying to hide her or anything, just it was raining. She's tall though and her legs were sticking out the bottom. :ROFLMAO:

Fortunately I’ve kept my boxes for all 4 dolls so, they’ll all be snug and safe with no one to see their feet 🤣

I live alone and don’t envisage that changing so, a house move by myself just isn’t feasible, outsourcing it was the best decision I made when I moved to my current house.

Yeah, it was a little different in my case. Our new house was only 2 miles away and we had no specific time frame to complete the move. So making several trips with the car all loaded up was doable. Even if we had hired movers though, the dolls would still have made the trip seated in the car with us. Of course these days that too would take more than one trip. ;)

I’m looking to move closer to family, it’ll be a good 35-45 minute drive in each direction. My current home is a first time buyer house so, I’m guessing I’ll be at the start of the chain too which means I’ll have to vacate first (same happened with my last move).

I only had toys and one torso when I moved last time so, they went in boxes and mirrored everything else. I do think the wisest thing for me is using a black pallet wrap around the boxes and saying it’s new furniture if there’s any queries as to the contents, I’ll also pack the heads separately and they’ll be able to come in the car with me.

Whatever happened to the good old MFO boxes.. doll in surround with pillows/cushions/blankets etc.
