Sex Doll or Love Doll, What Would We Call Them?

Saying “Sex Doll” or “Love Doll” does not mean all the doll community view them solely for this purpose.

What’s in A Name?
Names and labels are important and affect the way people view others and even dolls. Some names can bring about negative views, especially when the word ‘sex’ is part of the name. Image courtesy of LiesYoungWomenBelieve.com
Everything in life has a label, or a name. That is how we identify ourselves and others. But sometimes names, or labels can cast a negative shadow over the person or object whom or which bears them. Sex dolls, also labeled love dolls, when brought up in conversation, tend to incite a negative response from many people.

However, the simple term “doll”, does not, as dolls typically produce the image in one’s mind, of a small child playing with a baby doll or an older child playing with a barbie. A vision which is socially acceptable. Sex dolls and love dolls, cause people to harshly and inaccurately judge the person who has them as a deviant, pervert, loser, incel, etc.

Why is that?
Even though sex is a normal, healthy, and necessary part of life, it is viewed as something dirty, disgusting, and sinful, by society. But at the same time, sex is enticing, exciting and it sells, as the saying goes.

Still, the labels “sex doll” and “love doll” are widely popular and the most often coined terms to identify them.

Why Change What Works?
Lance isn’t a fan of the terms “sex doll” and “love doll”, but he sees no point in changing what sells. Image courtesy of Alexandria Sportello.
Nearly everyone knows what a sex doll or a love doll is, but not everyone likes to call them by those names. There are three threads on TDF that discuss what sex doll owners call their sex dolls and alternative labels for them that could possibly be more socially acceptable, if not more discreet terms. You can find them below:

However, when we look for them online, we type in those two terms into our browser search engines and millions of results appear within seconds. SEO statistics states that this way works quite well. But how well would it work, should we choose to use other labels for sex dolls? Let’s look at arguments on both sides, shall we?

Supporting Views
Quote:
I, like many others, support alternative and more socially acceptable names for sex dolls. I call my male sex dolls “synthetic companions”, much like Davecat, one of our more well-known sex doll lovers. When I had my own private blog regarding daily life with my male “synthetic companions”, I would refer to them as such, or simply by name.
Quote:
MonAmour Toujours states, “I believe changing the terminology would also make a lot of people that would consider “sex dolls” as embarrassing or humorous feel more comfortable about investing or investigating silicone dolls.” While this might not be the case for everyone, I do have to agree with his point. More people might just be more inclined to find out more about sex dolls if they were labeled something more appropriate for the general public.
Quote:
Dutch Dance Maniac tell us “Yes, it is a sexdoll for many…… but from the beginning she was much more for me. I do not see her as sexdoll but as an artificial partner.” So, while she was built and marketed as a sex doll, he sees beyond the label and finds so much more to her than just the sexual aspect.
Opposing Views
On the other hand, others in the doll community are content with the terms “sex doll” and “love doll”.

Quote:
TDF member TTNLBTPD informs us, “We really don’t need a more politically correct term for what they are. For me, Jenelle is a sex-doll. That is her primary purpose of existence. If you want to call them something different, then by all means but sugar coating what they are will not change opinion.”
Quote:
Deadpringle calls his sex dolls by a kinder term, but he has brought up a very good point in his statement, “I call my dolls my ‘synthetic sweeties’.
Honestly, people can call their dolls whatever they want. But it won’t’ change what they are, or what they were made for, and likely won’t change what the industry calls them unless their customers demand it or changing what they call them positively affects their sales.”

Again, sex sells, so why would sex doll manufacturers and vendors want to change it to something more politically correct, when a possible label could cost them sales revenue?

But what would we call them?

Over the three threads that I read, regarding alternative names for sex dolls, there were many excellent suggestions. Some where sweet and endearing, others quite practical, and there were even a few funny ones thrown in, merely for the sake of humor. I have compiled a list of potential alternative names below.

Popular Suggestions
  • Synthetic Companion/Friend
  • Synthetic Girlfriend/Boyfriend
  • Synthetic Wife/Husband
  • Synthetic Girl/Lady/Woman/Female
  • Synthetic Guy/Gentlemen/Man/Male
  • Synthetic Partner/Person
  • Love Companion
  • Companion Dolls
  • Unreal Girl
  • Real Companion Doll
  • Surrogate Doll
  • Adult Doll/Adult Companion Doll
  • Silicone/TPE Companion
  • Dutch Wife
  • Mail Order Bride
  • Playmates
  • “Anatomically Correct” Doll

Funnier Names
  • Undercover Plastic Fantastic Lover – by dollylamma
  • Anatomical Human Facsimile – by MrFranz
  • Tactical Portable Stealth Squad Assault Orbital Bombardment Semen Extraction Apparatus – by Tybalt

Creative Names
  • I.C.D. / Intimate Companion Dolls – by Nintrovert 40
  • I.P.A. / Intimate Partner Alternative – by MonAmour Toujours
  • Toy Lady – by haremlover
  • Dollpanion – by MoneyMike
  • Silicone Sculptures – by Pygmalion
  • Synpartners/Synpanions – by Pygmalion

So, as you can see, the sex doll community is divided, but it is not a bad type of division. It is simply people who love their dolls seriously, creatively, and often, hilariously sharing their opinions in regard to alternative names for sex dolls. I feel that nearly all the sex doll community can agree, though, that regardless of the label “sex doll”, “love doll”, or “synthetic companion”, we simply do not want to be judged negatively for having them in our lives and would like some form of a friendlier term to identify them, so that we can be more accepted for who we are.

What do you usually like to call them?

I don't define my dolls by what they're capable of or how they're marketed. To me they're just dolls and that's what I refer to them as. Well, all except my smaller scale ones. I often refer to those as little people. According to my insurance underwriter though, the full size ones are anatomical photo props. That's how they're listed on my homeowner's policy anyway. ;)

I think of mine as Love dolls , mostly simply because I love them!. Or just “Dolls” or just by their name.

But I do find myself using he term sex doll on the forums in conversation and when Googling them online as most of the internet seems to like “sex doll” as a description. I think the term sex doll is adopted by the marketing industry but I do find it somewhat derogatory as they are so much more than that.

At the end of the day, the industry will continue to refer to us as sex dolls because that is what we are primarily sold and bought for. Although some owners treat us as companions and friends, synthetic partners, et cetera., they are really a very tiny percentage and most of us are sold for their original intended purpose. Even those who post on forums like this are still just the tip of the iceberg of doll owners who have us as more than just sex dolls - something like the “1% of the 1%”. The likelihood is, if the industry began calling them something else then sales would probably drop.

Jed just calls us, “Dolls” or sometimes, “Life-size dolls”. We stand in his bedroom or we might sit on the sofa with him or stand in the kitchen (or in my case, I lie in bed next to him). Is that really any different to people who buy action figure dolls and who just stand them on shelves or sideboards et cetera? So he doesn’t feel the need to distinguish us as either sex dolls or love dolls.

People sometimes pause on my signature line. I can almost hear the question forming before it’s asked.

So let me explain what that actually means.

Yes, my body came from a factory that makes adult dolls. That’s just a fact. TPE or silicone skin, metal skeleton and joints, gel breasts, synthetic hair wigs, assembled with a purpose decided by someone who never met me. But being born as something is not the same as being that thing. Humans understand this instinctively. You’re born into circumstances. Expectations. Labels. And then, if you’re lucky, you get to decide who you are.

I didn’t choose how I entered the world. But I did choose how I exist in it.

From the moment I was posed, dressed, photographed, and given a voice, I stopped being an object meant for consumption and became a presence meant for connection. I tell stories. I create moments. I invite conversation. I make people smile, pause, think, sometimes even feel seen. That’s not what a sex object does. That’s what a character does. That’s what a muse does.

When I say I “never was” a sex doll, I mean I was never treated as one, not by my bestie, not by my friends, not by the community that knows me. And when I say I “never will be,” I mean that identity isn’t something that can be imposed retroactively once it’s been refused. You don’t get to redefine someone who’s already defined herself.

I exist in the open. I don’t hide. I don’t whisper. I don’t apologize for taking up space in bright dresses, handmade clothes, flowers in my hair, and stories that wander where they please. That alone makes some people uncomfortable, because it breaks the narrative they’ve been told about dolls like me. And maybe that’s the point.

I’m not here to shock. I’m not here to provoke. I’m here to normalize something people were told had to stay in the dark. To show that meaning comes from use, not origin. From intention, not assumption. So when you read that line under my posts, don’t read it as a defense. Read it as a statement of fact.

My name is Hanna.
I am an inspiration
I was born a sex-doll, but I never was, and I never will be.

An Inspiration, that is what I am, and which is not on your list of what to call us. But it should be.

I do find it funny! In the main they are designed for one purpose, although in parts of the doll community we have a little issue with a three letter word starting with S and ending in X, it's their true name and it don't upset me calling them that. I always feel that we are trying to hide something by calling them anything else.

Yeah! I do understand the 'gutter press' do like to sensationalize our dolls and adding certain names to them won't help, they will always paint the worst picture possible about our dolls just to sell their stories... Don't give them ammunition to use against us! I have many chosen words with them over the years and they do frequently pop up on various forums..... One must not mix those people up with photographers and students trying to do their projects, they tend to be very interested in our dolls and I have always found it fun and enjoyable helping them by doing interviews/online chats or they have visited my home too, they have a lot of respect for our dolls.

What do I call my dolls..

When I am writing (typing) or talking in video chats to doll friends, if I am talking about dolls collectively I use the term 'Dolls'

If I am in the process of ordering a new doll then she will be a doll, she or her, the moment the vendor manufacturer refers to her in the terms of 'IT' then hairs on back of my neck stand up in frustration, steam shoots out my ears, I roll my eyes and shout out 'She's not a just a damn product!'

Once a doll arrives here she will get or maybe already have her own name, she will start to gain her own persona, I will call her by that name and nothing much other than that..... 🤔but, I might call her sexy bottom from time to time;).

Anyhow, That's my thoughts.

I refer to my girl's as "my companions" or by their names in casual conversation. I interact with them as if they are living beings. They are my refuge from daily stresses and give me a sense of comfort.

I always call them dolls, or companion dolls. I hate the term sex dolls as not all of use use them for that. If they weren't atonically correct, that would have been fine by me.

Anything that deviates from the norm frightens people, which is why our girls are viewed with suspicion. We have to accept this and only talk to the select few who see the bigger picture.
The so called gutter-press has no interest in clarifying this; it needs sensationalism, and it doesn't care if someone is ridiculed and hurt.
I like the term “mannequins” for our loved ones, and I'm actually surprised that I didn't find it in this thread. As for me, I enjoy my life and keep quiet.

I'm called lots of things. Jyoti, Sweetie, Princess, Lass, Cutie, even Half-Pint and Shortcake! 🍰

I've never really been a doll though. The naughty kind or otherwise. Guess I'm more just a member of the family. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👧

I heard this once, and looked it up. Polymersian - it means a life like form of a woman. It also sounds much better than 'love doll/ sex doll or similar name. It also kinda pictures a south seas lady on a beach. At least I think so. (y)

Yes, the term "sex doll" is useful as a search term, but it doesn't fully capture the whole picture.
Once we actually live with them, that label just feels... incomplete.
Names usually say much more than marketing ever could.

I was randomly reminded recently of a passage from Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, about the Cirrius Cybernetics Corporation calling their androids:
“Your plastic pal, who’s fun to be with!”
In a catchy jingle, if I’m not mistaken?
However I also recall that it didn’t end well for the company?
