It's been getting a bit colder recently and I thought there was a draft coming from my window. Also, my small bedroom only has yellow colour blinds that don't block out much light (and there are street lights outside). So I thought maybe I could knock something up for free to stop the draft and - as a bonus - block out some light. My first attempt was a bit of a fail. This was my second attempt, using bits of polystyrene packaging from doll boxes, tin foil, tape and velcro, for free (for free because I had these things lying about the house):

And now the draft from the window is gone. And the bedroom is super dark at night (tiny bit of light around the edges) like the cave a man's sleeping place is meant to be 🍻.

PS You can tell in the photo above, how the double bed only just fits in the small bedroom, only a few inches in it. I really could do with getting rid of the radiator (my central heating hasn't worked since early 2025, when I had a gas leak into the property, so I got my gas capped because it didn't seem worth spending money getting the pipes redone - I barely used any gas, mainly the standing charge I was paying monthly, like £30 a month standing charge and £10 for gas.)

My gawd, I love my central heating, I would hate to loose it! How do you manage?

Good job with making the room darker and getting rid of the draft! I don't suffer from that, but get mould and have to use special cleaner every couple of weeks. It certainly looks like a man cave with the beautiful Naomie there in bed!😊

Quite easily 😊. Even when I had it working, I barely turned it on. I spend most of my time in one room, doesn't make sense to heat up all the other rooms in my house.

Now I have an electric oil filled radiator in the hallway, set to 12 degrees celsius, so the house doesn't get frosty, and keep my small bedroom at 17-20 degrees celsius (small oil filled radiator and fan heater), and that's all I need 🍻.

I don't actually have running hot water (the hot water tap in the kitchen started leaking like crazy so I closed the valve on it ... I made a half-arsed attempt to fix it) except when I want a shower, then I stick the immersion heater on for an hour or so (also use the fan heater to warm up the shower room). Always thought it was daft I had to run the hot tap for like 30 seconds to get any hot water.

I'm saving up a load of maintenance jobs for when I come to leave the house some day, but I kinda like where I live. I can walk into the supermarket in 10 minutes, town centre in 15 minutes, train station is 10 minutes away, a nice big common is just 30 minutes walk away. If my Thai wife ever comes to England, I'll hand the maintenance over to her so she can earn her keep 😉.

Many thanks Jemma. Really I should invest in something professional, but it's not bad for a freebie. It attaches to the wall at the top using white velcro which blends quite well with the magnolia walls, so when removed you hardly notice anything.

Mould sounds a bit dodgy. And cleaning every couple of weeks must be a bit annoying. I think Miss K would give the mould a good spanking to stop it coming back 🍻.

I can't wait until Easter, when I'm sure I'll find the girls' Christmas presents along with the Easter eggs.
