I remembered it all. “Her name was Emily. She said the land didn’t really have an official name. No boundary markers. No maps. No single word for the whole of it. But the place was known through use, through paths worn into grass, through the bend of the river, through the stands of oak and hickory that broke the open prairie. The people who moved through that region understood it as part of a larger system. River. Bluff. Woodland. Tallgrass. What we call the Rock River Valley now, she said it would have just been known by how it moved. Where it bent. Where the current changed. And the prairie to the west, she said that was where the ground opened. Where the sun stayed longer.

She said this”, as I nodded toward the picture, “would be late summer. Late July. Early August. Everything that was going to bloom had already bloomed. Everything that was going to fruit had started to ripen. She said that overlap doesn’t last long. The flowers, she named them: Wild bergamot, Blue vervain, Yarrow. Fleabane, Butterfly weed. Black-eyed Susans.

She said the colors would all be there at the same time. Blue. White. Orange. Yellow. Dense. Not uniform. Layered. Movement everywhere. Insects. Wind. Light shifting. She said you wouldn’t react to it. You would just register it.

The berries, she said those wouldn’t be from the same place. Blueberries. Raspberries. Maybe blackberries. Edges. Near trees. Disturbed ground. You’d have to move to collect them. Then come back. She said this time of year…” I paused. “…there’s energy everywhere. If you know where to look.”

Rachel didn’t interrupt.

“Emily had said the position matters. How she’s lying. It’s not random. You can see the sky, but still track movement without turning your head. Hands behind the head doesn’t mean relaxed. It means nothing immediate needs to be done. She said that’s rare.”

I stopped.

“The prairie makes that possible. You can see distance. Nothing approaches without being seen. She said the basket being there means the work isn’t done. It’s paused. That’s different.”

The printer went silent. It was done. Rachel turned her head, got up, walked over, pulled out the page. She looked at it for a second, then turned and walked back to the table. She held it out toward me. A grin from ear to ear. "Monet."

"Now go back and have the museum lady explain this one." I could see that wicked smile on Rachel's face as she shouted out. “Your other mom was a real bad ass!”
