This was gone into on the UK Forum. I think that it was the date on which they first went on the market.

Because that is the date that Loverboy suggested and everyone said "yes that is a good day".
Therefore July 12 was declared "Teddy Babe day" and we all had Teddy Babe picnics on that day.
