chapter 1, part 1
In a dusty city of mud brick huts and canvas awnings, a pair of brown cloaked women walk side by side through the crowded street. In the flowing crowd, their garb is a perfect camouflage. Dark hair frames the face of the blue-eyed woman, bright red hair frames the face of the green eyed woman. Both figures sport an ample rise in the chest area of the cloaks.
Approaching an android vendor, the dark haired woman eyed the display. From a platform, a man in a tight orange jumpsuit calls out the praises of the very human looking android women for sale. His attire contrasts sharply on the street of varying shades of brown. Noting a vegetable stand on the other side of the street, the dark hired woman touches the red head on her arm, and said, “Tabitha, go buy some food, whatever they have that looks edible.”
Tabitha turned her gaze from the android display to her friend and frowned. “Dottie, I thought we were going to find a place to stay first?” she asked.
Dottie flicked her eyes at the man selling androids. Placing a hand on Tabitha's shoulder, she gently pushed Tabitha toward the vegetable cart. “We'll need to eat too. I'll ask this guy if he knows about a boarding house,” she said firmly.
“You're the boss,” Tabitha said with a sigh. Sauntering over to the cart, she scanned the wares, hoping to find something she recognized.
Dottie walked over to the man in orange. Noticing her approach, he gestured flamboyantly to the line of androids.
“Hello, dear lady! I see you have an eye for these androids. These are the best androids you'll find in the galaxy. Besides performing any household task you wish, they can also shop, and even work for you, letting you live a life of comfort and relaxation!” he announced.
Wearing an innocent face, Dottie asked, “Sir, are these the new RoboDroids? I heard they are not as intelligent as the older models.”
“Nonsense!” the man proclaimed. “These new androids have much greater memory capability, as well as a much tougher exterior. And, if you have an older model, we will gladly take your model in trade to pay half on a new one, no matter the condition,” he replied, stressing the last part.
“But mine has an arm that fell off, she is all scraped up, and her jaw doesn't work,” Dottie said cautiously.
“No problem,” the man assured her. “If you can't bring her here, I will have someone collect her for you. Do you see one here you would like?”
Dottie walked up to the edge of the platform and made a show of scanning the line of androids. Paying attention to their forearms, she noted a curious slit under the wrist of one that Human eyes would not pick up on. Briefly, she had a flashback of a line of RoboDroids entering the palace gardens. Their hands were folded up at the wrists as gun barrels protruded from their arms. They fired a deadly rain of bullets as they advanced.
Shaking her head to clear away the vision, Dottie offered a disarming smile. “I'm sorry sir, but I am not ready to buy one yet.”
“No need to worry, Madam. You can pay on time, even wait up to one year to begin payments. You can take one home now for a free two month trial if you wish,” he boasts.
Skirting away from him, Dottie said, “I will have to ask my husband first. You'll be here later so I can bring him by?”
Following her,the man replied, “No need. Here, let me activate one for you. You can take her home, and talk with your husband about it. Every one has all the current sales information in memory.”
The man turned to activate a thin blond wearing a black and white maid's outfit. Dottie turned to go get her friend. Right after she completed her turn, Tabitha was right there in front of her. Dottie stopped with a gasp of surprise.
“There is nothing there that looks good,” Tabitha complained with a wave of her hands.
Behind Dottie, the man announced, “Here we go, Madam. Cookie is ready to accompany you!”
Dottie turned, heart in her throat. She and Tabitha gazed up at the blond wearing a bright smile.
The android's smile faded into a scowl, then a sneer. Cookie's arms came up and her hands folded back to reveal gun barrels protruding from her wrists.
Dottie squatted down, grabbed the platform and pushed hard. The platform tipped over as the android fired. Bullets sprayed the buildings across the street to send chucks of dirt flying. As the android fell back with the platform, the bullets tore into the supports of the awning above. The dusty cloth collapsed it down into the mess of platform and androids. People scream and run. Dottie grabbed Tabitha by the hand and joined the fleeing crowd.
“She tried to kill us!” Tabitha wailed as she struggled to keep her feet from Dottie hauling her into an alley.
“That was a RoboDroid, they were MADE to kill us!” Dottie snapped back at her.
They ran to the end of the alley, Dottie scanned this street, then makes for another alley farther down to keep buildings between them and the RoboDroid that was sure to be chasing them. Behind her, Dottie heard a wail of anger, then a burst of gunfire. The corner of the building beside them exploded into fragments. Dottie pulled Tabitha past her as they duck into the next alley.
“RUN!”Dottie screamed, giving Tabitha a shove in her lower back. Dottie herself stopped to rip a board from an old crate.
Tabitha ran to the end of the alley, then stopped, noting Dottie was no longer beside her. Seeing Dottie crouch down behind a pile of refuse with the board, she cried, “What are you doing!”
Dottie motioned for Tabitha to keep going. “Get out of here, I'll slow her down!”
“You don't bring a club to a gun fight!” Tabitha yelled.
The blond android, Cookie, appeared from around the corner and into the alley. A sadistic smile spread across her face as she spotted Tabitha. Teeth clenched in anger, Cookie growled, “I got you now!”, and raised her arms to shoot. Moving closer, she strode by the refuse pile. Dottie shot up and swung. The board landed right across Cookie's face with a solid 'WHACK'. Blond hair flew as the RoboDroid's feet flew up. Cookie did a complete backflip to land on her face. Dottie raced to Tabitha, grabbed her hand and barked, “MOVE YOUR ASS!”
The pair fled, zig-zagging through streets and alleys. Approaching an open square,Dottie guided them over to the side of a building and scanned the square. In the crowd were more RoboDroids. They looked peaceful on their errands. One brunette RoboDroid was playing with a pair of boys by the fountain. Despite the smile on the RoboDroid's face,Dottie had no doubt that if that RoboDroid saw them, the smile would disappear and the gun barrels would come out. “Damn it!” she spat.
“Why did that android try to kill us?” Tabitha asked in a shaking voice.
Not listening, Dottie said to herself, “I thought we'd be safe here. Come on, we have to get out of town.”
Slinking through the back streets, the pair reached the last buildings. Hurrying between two fenced yards, they reach open ground and headed for a hillock to get out of sight.
Tabitha glanced back at the town. “Where are we going to stay?”
“I don't know,” Dottie said in a tired voice.
“Where are we going to get food?”
“I don't know.” Dottie replied with a touch of anger.
“How many of them are there?”
Dottie stopped in her tracks and turned to Tabitha. “I don't know! We'll have to keep moving and find someplace safe!”
“You'll be safe with us,” a male voice said.
They had made the top of the rise. Just on the other side, a rough looking man sporting a big rifle eyed them as he stood up. “Don't even try to run,” he warned. “Just keep going the way you're going, I'm sure we can find a home for a pair of runaway androids.”
“But...we're not androids,” Dottie said as sweetly as she was able while looking down a rifle barrel.
The man looked down at a box with a screen they can't see. “This says you both are. You know, if the authorities find runaways, they make an example out of them. Right to the reprocessing center.”
“Reprocessing?” Tabitha asked fearfully.
The man nodded grimly. “Yup. First they crush you, then send you through a mincer to chop you into bits. Next, the bits are separated into material types and dumped into hoppers.”
Giving a shudder, Tabitha asked in a weak voice, “What if someone makes a mistake, and the android is not a runaway?”
The man shrugged. “The RoboDroid company is giving out new androids to whoever mistakenly has their droid reprocessed. They also pay a hundred credits for every runaway turned in to them.”
“I'll give you four hundred if you let us go,” Dottie said quickly.
Appraising them, the man shook his head. “Naw, I figure we can sell you to some farmers who'll pay much better than that for you. Those RoboDroid people haven't gotten out to the rural areas yet. There's still a market for other androids with those folks. Now, if you would, ladies..” the man finished by motioning them down the hill.
At the bottom of the hill a dirt colored truck with an arched canvas cover was parked on the road. By the open back, two other men lowered the tailgate. Inside are a few work androids, metal skinned models with round lidless eyes. Tabitha and Dottie are escorted to the truck.
Looking at the ground, Dottie quietly whispered to herself, “I'm sorry, my Queen.”
