I Didn’t Think They Were Movable….

It was on Monday 28 November 2022 that people travelling to work had a shock, the clean air zone had arrived. Now you were expected to pay to drive in a traffic jam! During 2023 I got caught twice because the road I was on, shaped like a worm, dipped in and out of the zone. The bottom of the zone followed the deviations of the road, the top did not. I soon learnt the way to get across the city, and in and out avoiding the zone.

About three weeks ago I went out to research and take some photos for an upcoming Elina feature, I went out and returned my usual way. Then a week ago, I did the same thing only on my return I discovered I would be entering the zone. It took me an additional twenty miles to skirt the city and get back home. Once home I reviewed the map of the zone….I was shocked….it had grown, substantially. On Tuesday I had to go to Southampton getting out onto the A4 was no problem, but I knew getting back in would be, as the inward section was in the zone whereas the outward was not. I had to take the A4174 link road. This road links all the major routes, A38, A37, A4, plus the A420 and takes you to the beginning of the M32 at its junction with the M4 an additional eleven miles.

I can drive without fear of a fine in all the towns and cities in Britain except two, Birmingham and Bristol. It’s only been in existence for about eighteen months and it’s already been extended, where will it end? Will Bristol become one huge Clean Air Zone, will I be living in it at some point in the future?
