It was unseasonably warm today so I asked Jhipri if she wanted to go out and help me get my old car sorted. Well before I could even finish my sentence, she had her coat on and was headed out the door...

By the time I caught up to her, she was already in the driver's seat trying to start the car...
I never even had a chance to explain to her why the car wouldn't start, before she's climbing up in the engine compartment and taking things apart.

First she checked the air filter...
Then she noticed the engine was low on oil.
When that didn't work, she started fiddling with one of the carburetors.
They looked okay, but then she found an old rusty spark plug and thought it had fallen out.
Once she realized it was just a leftover from a previous tune-up, she went back and tried to start the car again...

That's when she finally noticed the fuel gauge was on empty.
Oh well.... at least it was a nice day to get out of the house.

Carburetors! By Darkseid, that's a word many folks today won't understand 😁 I remember you saying on TDF once about playing car video games and having done it for real as a young man, I guess it'd be in cars like that one :)

Yeah, that's true and that car has 2 of them! Yes sir, did a bit of drag racing back in the day. Not in a car like that though, I had a 340 ci (5.6 liters) V8 Plymouth Duster. That sucker could pass anything, but a petrol station! :ROFLMAO:

Yep, Jhipri can dismantle anything. It's the putting back together again part she has trouble with. 🙃🔧

Can't keep 'em spotless when they've been in service over 60 years! Jhipri doesn't mind getting her hands dirty. 😉

Wow, a Corvair? Haven't seen one of those in a while! Does it have a suicide heater in it?"

Not sure what you're referring to... Corvair had a rear mounted, air-cooled, 6 cylinder engine. Similar to the Porsche design. The first production year 1960 had an available gasoline heater, similar to the one found in early VW's. Subsequent years, 1961-1969, just bled off hot air from the lower cooling shrouds to provide heat to the interior. Similar to the later VW design. Mine is a 1964, so uses that type heater. Works very well provided the engine is in proper repair, no oil or exhaust leaks.

Back in the day, that was a common issue with Vairs. Due to the quality of seal materials in wide use at the time. Later, when viton rubber became more commonly available, that was no longer an issue. My heater is cozy warm and smoke free.
