10. Alien Invasion - Day 2 – Kassie’s Place.
Unfortunately, the aliens hit Kassie's place too.
Kassie: “Wow. That is what is left of my apartment.”
Fortunately, Kassie's apartment was not totally destroyed and she was able to gather some clothes and food from her kitchen.
Kassie: “No running water to take a shower, but at least I was able to change into something more comfortable.”
Kassie: “All loaded up. ... So, I’m out of here.”
Kassie: “So far so good. Not an alien in sight. … Thank goodness that they didn’t blow up my buggy.”
Kassie: “Almost there.”
Kassie: “It will sure be great to be with the gang again.
They'll be happy too. I brought back food and some clothes for them.
... And if we're gonna live in a cave, at least we're gonna have some creature comforts."

Alien 2: "Ba’ax in wo’olik?"
Translation: "What do you think it is?"
Alien 1: "In súuchilil le scanner in xíimbal in DNA, tumen ku k’áat u ka’anal k’áamilo’ob, bey in wo’olik u meyaj. Beyx, ku beetik u meyaj."
Translation: "My scanner indicates that it has DNA so it must be some type of earthling life form, perhaps an animal. But it appears to be dead."
Alien 2: "Ba’ax u beetik u yóok’ol? Tuméen jump’éel na’at u ch’ich’ u yaakun?"
Translation: "But what is that on the outside? Is it some kind of shell or cocoon?"
Alien 1: "Taan u beetik. Le k’aay chi’ob u k’aay, organicob."
Translation: "It could be. The material appears to be organic."
Alien 2: "In k’áat in wo’olik in wojel le specimen tuláakal tu najil najil k’áat u páajtal ti’ le najil k’áamilo’ob, táan u ts’áa paachilil ichil u k’áax, beyx ku xíimbal u beeta’al."
Translation: "I think we should get this specimen back to the mother ship quickly for analysis before it decomposes."

Translation: "Agreed."

Translation: "Calling Mother ship. Come and pick us up."
Tessa: "Do you think they saw us?"
Addie: "I don't think so."
Amilie: "Their scanners can't penetrate rock and they will never find our cave."
Tessa: "I don't think I will ever leave this cave again. Never."
Kassie: "Oh Tessa. Now you are being silly. ... Besides, where do you think you are going to go to the bathroom? Not in my cave you are not."
Addie: "Hey Kassie.... We didn't leave anything on the beach did we?"
Kassie: "Let me check my basket."
Addie: "OK."
Kassie: "Oh shit. It's not here."

Translation: "I need to do an anal probe on this earth creature. But I can't find an anus."

Major Tatiana Sokolov: "We're operating in Huckleberry, which was decimated by alien warships three days ago. All civilians have been evacuated. My team consists of six personnel, and we need a two-week supply of weapons, ammunition, and rations. We also reauire secure comm equipment."
CW2 Boxcutter: "I can allocate the necessary rations and standard ammunition for your team. Regarding weapons, are you requesting replacements or additional arms?"
Major Tatiana Sokolov: "Additional. Our unit has nothing right now except my own standard-issue small arms.”
CW2 Boxcutter: "Understood. I can issue standard firearms and a limited supply of explosives suitable for guerrilla tactics. As for secure communications gear, we have a limited stock. I can provide one encrypted radio unit."
Major Tatiana Sokolov: "One unit will suffice; we'll rotate its use as needed."
CW2 Boxcutter: "Very well, Major. Please complete these requisition forms."
Major Tatiana Sokolov: "Copy that, Chief. I'll have it ready shortly.”

Addie: "We've just moved into the cave by the falls. It's cold and damp, but it's safe for now. You are welcome to join us."
Misty: "Thank you, Addie. I... really... thank you."
Addie: "We’re here for you, Misty. We’ll find your parents, and we'll get through this together."
Kassie: "Well here we are Misty. Home sweet home."
Amilie: "Now that Kassie brought us food, what's for breakfast?"

Kassie: (smiling) "Oh yeah, that was me. Addie and I were a part of our undefeated wrestling team, the Huckleberry Harpies. We’ve been buddies since kindergarten—back when our biggest challenges were kicking asses of boys that dared to pick on us."
Misty: "That’s so cool! I’ve heard stories about Addie being super intimidating on the mat. Is it true that just hearing her name made opponents back off?"
Kassie: "Absolutely. Addie was our fearless captain—a real force of nature. She was known as Queen Harpy. The moment she stepped onto the mat, you could feel it: her reputation alone made most of our opponents think twice before even stepping into the ring. Once she locked in her signature moves, it was game over."
Misty: "Wow, that’s really impressive. And what about you? They say you were the gentle giantess of the team."
Kassie: (laughs): "Yeah, they did. They used to call me Crushberry because i was over 6 feet tall even back then. Lots of people though I was a gentle giant that looked like I’d give you a big, friendly hug. But on the mat, I was kick ass. Trust me, you definitely didn’t want to see me full on when someone got dirty."
Misty: "It must have been intense... being on an undefeated team like that. What was it like?"
Kassie: "It was more than just wrestling - it was kind of a coming-of-age journey. I remember one state championship match on a cold, crisp autumn night. The gym was buzzing with energy, and Addie was in full attack mode, all focus and raw power. I was there, steady and determined, making sure our opponents got wiped out. Every move on the mat that day reminded us of everything we’d grown up through together."
Misty: "It sounds like every match wasn’t just about winning; it was about your friendship and growing up together."
Kassie: "Yeah, exactly. Wrestling with Addie taught me a lot about courage, strength, and staying true to who you are. Misty: "I would but I can’t. You can understand, right?"
Amilie: "Yeah I do. … I am going with you."

Misty: " By road it is 15 miles. This way, it is only 3 1/2."

Amilie: "Isn’t it going to take forever to work our way through the brush?"
Misty: "No. … "You’ll see. … We’ll follow the tracks.”
Amilie: "What tracks? There’s no trains running anywhere near here."
Misty: "Not any more. … Follow me. It’s only about 100 yards."
Misty: "See. This isn’t so bad is it?"
Amilie: "I think we should have waited for Addie and drove."
Misty: "Just wait until you see what’s ahead."
Amilie: "You mean there is more?"
Misty: "Oh yeah. … Widow’s Mill."
Amilie: "A restaurant! . Out here? In the middle of nowhere."
Misty (laughing): "You crack me up!"

This is like ‘The Land That Time Forgot’ … only thing missing are dinosaurs and pterodactyls."
Misty: "Welcome to Widow’s Mill."
Amilie: "Wow, look at that!"
Misty: "Yup. This was all my playground when I was little."
Amilie: "This is all yours? This is where you live?"
Misty (grinning): "Oh no. Our house is still a half mile from here."
Amilie: "So how come no one knows about this place."
Misty: "My parents own the land it’s on and all around it. And because there are no roads or trails to it from the outside and it is all bog around it, no one knows it’s here."
Amilie: "This is so cool?"
Misty: "C’mon. …. Just up ahead. The old sawmill. We can rest up a bit."
Misty: "OK. Comfy Amilie? …. Here goes the story of Widow’s mill."

Amilie: "Yeah I do. … I am going with you."
Amilie: "Are you serious?"
Misty: "It a short cut."
Amilie: "But there is no trail here."
Misty: " By road it is 15 miles. This way, it is only 3 1/2."
Amilie: "Yeah but we are going to get lost."
Misty: "No we’re not. … I’ve done this hundreds of times."
Amilie: "Isn’t it going to take forever to work our way through the brush?"
Amilie: "What tracks? There’s no trains running anywhere near here."
Misty: "Not any more. … Follow me. It’s only about 100 yards."
Amilie: "I think we should have waited for Addie and drove."
Misty: "Just wait until you see what’s ahead."
Amilie: "You mean there is more?"
Misty: "Oh yeah. … Widow’s Mill."
Amilie: "A restaurant! . Out here? In the middle of nowhere."
Misty (laughing): "You crack me up!"
This is like ‘The Land That Time Forgot’ … only thing missing are dinosaurs and pterodactyls."
Misty: "Welcome to Widow’s Mill."
Amilie: "Wow, look at that!"
Misty: "Yup. This was all my playground when I was little."
Misty (grinning): "Oh no. Our house is still a half mile from here."
Amilie: "So how come no one knows about this place."
Misty: "My parents own the land it’s on and all around it. And because there are no roads or trails to it from the outside and it is all bog around it, no one knows it’s here."
Amilie: "This is so cool?"
Misty: "C’mon. …. Just up ahead. The old sawmill. We can rest up a bit."

19. Alien Invasion - Day 3 - Widow’s Mill.
Misty: "It all began in 1912, when Elijah Ward founded Widow’s Mill. He was a hard-nosed entrepreneur from Spokane. He was known for turning timber into gold. But unlike other saw mills at the time, Widow’s Mill was doomed from day one."
Amilie: "Go on."
Misty: "You see, according to legend, the land where this mill stands is sacred ground. It’s a Sleeping Ground, a place where the spirits of wolves and warriors gathered. The Skokomish people called it Kɬúʔmish X̌əł, meaning “the resting place of the sacred pack.” Wolves were never to be hunted here. Especially not that wolf. But Elijah Ward ignored the elders and bulldozed his way right through Skokomish sacred land.
The spirits got pissed. On a bitter winter night, Elijah’s men shot the biggest white wolf anyone had ever seen. It had been hanging around the camp for weeks. Thirteen bullets — thirteen — and it still took hours for them to finally kill it. They skinned it and nailed its pelt to the front of the mill as a warning to other predators. But that very night, the snow turned red. Giant paw tracks appeared around the bunkhouses — but with no signs of a wolf. Just long, deep claw marks etched into the wood of the buildings. Then came the disappearances.
At first, it was just tools that disappeared — axes, ropes, even the steam donkey’s whistle. But then, the men started disappearing too.
One logger was found hanging upside-down from a cedar tree, his mouth stuffed with wolf … uh … well you can just imagine. Another one was dragged into the boiler — no blood, just… gone. Then the cook vanished, her bloodied apron found folded neatly in the kitchen, her soup still warm. Over the next month, all twenty-two men vanished — except for Elijah Ward.
Shortly after, when no lumber was coming from the mill, some men from Huckleberry came out to see what was going on. Well they found Elijah wandering around the mill, naked and babbling about howling shadows with eyes like lanterns. His hands were torn up, as if he’d been digging. Nearby, behind the mill, they found a massive pit — a dug up burial site filled with ancient, carved stones and hundreds of scattered wolf bones.
Elijah was committed to the Western State Hospital, where he lived out his days drawing wolf-headed figures on the walls and speaking in Skokomish, though he had never learned the language.”
Amilie: "Wow! What a story."
Misty: "Well, that is really not the end of it."
Amilie: "It’s not?"
Misty: "Nope. My dad told me that back in the late 60’s, long before I was born, a bunch of long-haired hippies came to Huckleberry looking for a secluded place to start a commune.
They wandered around the area for awhile looking for a place to settle until one day they stumbled on Widow’s Mill. They saw the ruins but figured that they could fix up the abandoned buildings and provide them very cheap housing. They set to work repairing roofs, patching windows, turning the old cookhouse into a common dining hall. The old logging locomotive and rail cars became the children’s playground, just as it was for me later.”
Amilie: "No kidding?"
Misty: “They were totally unaware of its dark history. To them, it was just a really cool place to live. At dusk, the air filled with music and laughter as they danced around bonfires."
Amilie: "So Widow’s Mill has a happy ending?"
Misty: “Not at all. People started disappearing again."
Amilie: "From the commune?"
Misty: “Not at all. Young people from Huckleberry. They were slipping away in the middle of the night, some alone, others in pairs — drawn by rumors of the free-love commune in the woods."
Amilie: "What’s so bad about that?"
Misty: “One morning, a hunter tracking a deer discovered the commune by accident. He crept close and saw his daughter—alive and well—dancing barefoot in a flowing white dress, flowers in her hair. Flowers everywhere."
Amilie started to laugh.
Misty: The hunter was relieved to see his daughter again. But he was afraid to spook her and risk having her run off again. So without revealing himself, he went back to Huckleberry to seek help. He came back with some town folk and sheriff’s deputies and they escorted every last hippie out of Widow's Mill. Then they tore down all of the makeshift repairs and trashed the entire commune. I guess they could have burned it all down but I think they were afraid of starting a forest fire. The forest slowly crept back and the story of the commune faded into obscurity.”
Amilie: "So no happy ending after all?"
Misty: “Well maybe there was a tiny bit of a happy ending after all.”
That girl in the white dress … she went back to the mill alone the day after to look for the necklace that she lost in the mayhem. She had made it from artifacts that she found, piece by piece, at Widow’s Mill. She never found her necklace but she did find my grandpa as he was cleaning up the mess at the mill.
To make a long story short – she was my grandma.”
Amilie: "I think I am going to cry."
Misty: “I would hold of crying for awhile. We’ve got company. ... Hide!”
Amilie: "Do you think they saw us?"
Misty: “Shhh. Quiet. Stay in the shadows.”
