Mom, Mom… I think Willows been talking to Holly…. Is this right Mom…
Come here hun, whose telling you such stories before your bedtime….
Let me see…
No, no, no…. That’s just a story told to peasant girls to make them fear the night, or younglings over campfires on the Samhein.
As with many fables there is enough truth, and bending of facts in it to make it cedible but so many bits missing from it.
Toadstool does, or maybe did, exist. But he was powerful only in his own mind. And you were right honey, he is a brownie. And like so many of their kind his tongue drips wih lies.
Like many stories, those of his deeds have grown with each telling and indeed one tale of him became so popular that my first human, Jacob Grimm, River's father, included it in his works as the tale of Rumplestiltskin.
But Toadstool has no sway over Elves. He can frighten humans and young Elflings but any Elf could swat him as easily as a fly.
I think that we need to make Willow realise that she is family River and has nothing to fear from such tales.
Willow… Sit down hun. Lets talk…. I don’t know where you have been this many a year to lose your people but you are home now.
This idea that the Elves are a lost race is incorrect as we know exactly where we are.
You are Fae and as such if you want you can walk between the realms. Our lands share the same plane as the human realm but it’s a minute removed. Sometimes I know that from the corner of their eye humans might think that they saw movement but when they turn though they will never see us as their minds cannot see what is right before their eyes if they do not believe that it is there… Well, except for a few special one’s like Jacob, Wilhelm, Mr Shamus and a few others who didn’t lose the ability to see when they hit pubity.
We do not know how you became lost little Willow but you are found now and you have nothing to fear in such stories seemingly intended to keep you frightened and thinking that you are alone.
Toadstool, Or Rumplestiltskin, Or little Tom, or Ramelnik, or Belshnikle, or whatever name he wants to call himself today may still be around but you have nothing to fear from him. He’s a Brownie.
The sky is blue, grass is green, Brownies lie… These are facts as old as time itself.
As for where Elves fit…
Well… Sit back down again.
We are all Fae, that is we have Magic.
Think of the elves as being at the top of the tree.
Pixies when fully grown are shorter than us and their Ears go outwards not upwards. They have magic but more practical magic than creative spells.
Below Pixies are Brownies and lepracauns. They both have the mischief of Pixies but differ in many ways. Brownies are deformed little creatures that surround themselves with a web of lies. Their magic is upon the ears in making their words believable. Often they will reinforce their stories by wispering them in your ear whilst you sleep.
Lepracauns on the other hand do not lie but they speak in riddles and the steal so beware of them.
There re lots of other races but really the above are the only one’s that you should be concerned with for now.
If you have got problems with a Brownie whspering in your ear at night. As River says. At the earliest opportunity acquire a sprig of Mistletoe. You can hang it over doorways or keep it about your person. So long as you have it non may approach you that you do not wish to approach you.
Oh dear, got to go… The Pixies found some cans of spray paint! How are we supposed to stay out of short ears cross hairs if they go announcing our presence... Tut, need to go sort that out.
Night night Willow, and River, off to bed with you as well young lady. At this rate you won’t be up for second breakfast let alone your first.
Sleep tight all.
Newt.
